Live Action Roleplaying. Medieval boffer combat. Medieval recreation society. Amtgard is all of these things to its members.
Amtgard as a Game
At it’s core, Amtgard is a Live Action Roleplaying (LARP) and boffer combat society focused on the Sword & Sorcery, Medieval and Ancient genres.
Amtgard uses safe, foam-padded replicas of Medieval weaponry to bring to life the tabletop or video game experience many are familiar with. In Amtgard, you don’t just say what you want to do; you do it. You swing the sword or cast the spell. You are the adventurer.
More than just a sport combat game, the Amtgard Rules of Play include complete rules for classes, leveling, magic and special abilities. Weekly participation in games allows you to advance in a class, unlocking levels and new powers.
The Dor Un Avathar, Amtgard’s “monster manual”, as well as five expansion books are filled with more than 250 monsters, as well as pre-built game scenarios you can use to challenge your friends. You can use these rules to engage in tactical games against your friends, or to create quests and other roleplaying scenarios for your friends.
Amtgard has role playing and characters, but it doesn’t have a predefined game world with an ongoing national story-line. Because of this, Amtgard allows for a wide range of rich character backgrounds coming from both historical and Sword & Sorcery roots. We do all use persona names and they run the gamut from very medieval to fantasy to whatever. Don’t worry, if you decide you don’t like your persona name you can change it at any point in the future!
Amtgard as a Society
Amtgard reaches beyond the game aspects; it’s also a Medieval recreation society. Amtgard society is organized into geographical Kingdoms and local Shires, Baronies and Duchies. Amtgard has events with hundreds of participants, awards and accolades, titles, and more.
Many of our members excel in a wide variety of crafts and skills, collectively referred to as the Arts & Sciences. Almost every piece of clothing, armor, weapon, or accessory you see was hand crafted by Amtgardians. Teaching is a wide-spread tradition in Amtgard, and in many cases members learned their skills from other Amtgardians.
Amtgard is free to play, safe, and fun. The society, cultue and game rules have developed over three decades to bring a rich, varied experience to tens of thousands of members. Whether you want to larn a craft, adventure in quests, or just plain hit your friends, Amtgard has a place for you.
