What is Amtgard?
Amtgard is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization dedicated to recreation in the Sword & Sorcery genre as well as educational aspects of both medieval and ancient cultures. Amtgard focuses largely on a Medieval-based boffer combat system, but also encompasses the arts and sciences of the era in a friendly, social atmosphere.
Amtgard uses safe, foam-padded replicates of Medieval weaponry. Anyone aged fourteen years or older may compete in the combat aspects of the game, but we welcome members of all ages.
Amtgard was founded in 1983 in El Paso, Texas by a small group of spirited individuals who used their imaginations, creativity and desire to have fun to develop the seeds of the society we still enjoy today. Since then, Amtgard has spread to over 300 chapters all across the United States and Canada, as well as a chapters in a number of countries worldwide.
How is Amtgard Organized?
Amtgard chapters are organized into regional Kingdoms. At this time there are 17 Kingdoms of Amtgard. New chapters and chapters not yet belonging to a Kingdom are known as Freeholds. Each Kingdom is it’s own incorporated entity and operates according to its own corpora of bylaws and the laws of the State it is incorporated in.
Kingdom officials are elected to 6 month terms by the active members of the Kingdom’s chapters. Representatives (typically the Monarch) from each Kingdom vote in a Circle of Monarchs to approve rules changes, create new Kingdoms, and perform other “in game” tasks.
Who Should I Talk To?
If you’d like to run a story on a local chapter, you can find a chapter near you using the Amtgard Atlas. The current officers and their contact information will be listed there. Thanks to their unusual clothing, Amtgarders attract attention wherever they go, and pictures of them are sure to do the same!
For stories on Amtgard, LARPing, or general boffer combat, contact the current national media relations officer listed on the right hand side of this page.
